On Thursday morning, several members of the men’s basketball team and coaching staff made the trip to Maplecrest Park in Maplewood, providing over 100 elementary-aged kids in attendance with the opportunity for first-hand interaction and instruction.
“This was definitely a great opportunity for our team to get out and give back to the local community,” said SHU forward Patrik Auda. “It is always nice to get involved with kids over the summer to do fun stuff and teach them basketball.”
Through the clinic, the Pirates worked with the attendees to hone their fundamental basketball skills while also emphasizing the importance of an active and healthy lifestyle.
Community involvement initiatives such as these are a fundamental part of the newly introduced H.A.L.L. (Helping Athletes Learn to be Leaders) Program and are a manifestation of a department-wide commitment to providing a well-balanced student-athlete experience. To learn more about The H.A.L.L. “Giving back to the community has always been a high priority for our program,” said head coach Kevin Willard. “Our players and coaches are encouraged to stay involved, especially when we have opportunities to work with children, like we did today with the South Mountain YMCA. We consistently stress the importance of being role models for local youth to our guys. Participation in these events play a key role in our personal development as leaders, while also enriching our community.”
