CHS FOOTBALL LOSES A TOUGH ONE, 34-21, TO NUTLEY

From NJ.com:

Mike Foster had two interceptions and Craig Merkle had a pick and scored twice as Nutley took advantage of six Columbia turnovers to post a 34-21 victory over the Maplewood school yesterday in Nutley.

Pete Russo also had an interception for Nutley and Joe Iannini and Vin Sacco recovered fumbles in the victory. Frank Malanga and Iannini had touchdown runs and John Conca hauled in a touchdown pass from Mark Carnevale as Nutley opened up a 20-0 lead after the first quarter.

That lead held until the third quarter when Merkle caught a touchdown pass from Anthony Condito to make it 27-0. Columbia would rally to cut its deficit to 27-14 on touchdown passes to C.J. Ibezim and Eriq Royal by Eli Rivera.
But a 45-yard scoring run by Merkle in the fourth quarter helped Nutley put the game away.
Merkle finished with 87 yards rushing for Nutley, while Iannini had 73 yards rushing. Carnevale was 4-of-11 passing for 104 yards.
Martino Pasteur had a late touchdown run for Columbia to bring the game to its final score.
