Word from Patch editor Carolyn Maynard-Parisi today that she is leaving. Another hit to the local websites that have seen editors cut in droves nationwide, and even in New Jersey.

Carolyn was already having to cover two towns at once, with South Orange added to her duties. The site will now have no local editor for at least a little while.

Another reason to check us out more often.

STAR-LEDGER FINALLY REPORTS ON ANTI-GAY COMMENT FIRING

It took The Star-Ledger more than a week, but they finally got around to reporting on the DPW employee fired for posting anti-gay comments.

Here is the story:

MAPLEWOOD — First he complained about picking up the garbage after a two-day concert in town.
Then he blamed the mess on "liberals who attend these shows and rant and rave about" green living "and then pollute the parks with everything you can think of in this musicfest."
And finally, Sam Falcetano launched into a tirade on Facebook against Obama, gays and Maplewood's liberal politics.
The veteran Maplewood Department of Public Works employee lost his job earlier this month, just days after he posted the comments, but the township won't give a reason for the termination.
Falcetano joins a growing list of public workers across the state facing scrutiny over their online behavior, with some losing their jobs as a direct result.

Read the rest HERE.

It oddly uses photos of the gay pride celebration rather than the worker himself.

SUPERINTENDENT OSBORNE TURNS DOWN MICHIGAN JOB

AnnArbor.com reports what we had suspected given the long delay in answering:

Brian Osborne has turned down the Ann Arbor school board's offer to become the next superintendent of Ann Arbor Public Schools, the district announced in an email Sunday.
In declining the job, Osborne cited "a developing family issue," concerns about moving his family from the East Coast and a desire to finish what he had started at his district in New Jersey, school board President Deb Mexicotte said in a statement.

Some members of the community began to grow anxiouslast week when the district had not received a definitive response from Osborne about the job offer. Many suggested that meant he did not intend to accept the superintendency and criticized Osborne for what they interpreted as a lack of forethought — making it to the final round of interviews without being prepared to commit

See Osborne's full statement to the district in Michigan below:

Statement from Dr. Osborne to the Ann Arbor Community:
"The Ann Arbor Board of Education conducted a thorough, professional, and transparent selection process. The entire school community is fortunate to have such dedicated public servants who are clearly committed to providing a great education to every child. I am humbled and honored by the confidence the Board and community have expressed, and appreciative of the learning opportunity that such a rigorous process provided. After deep reflection and deliberation, I have decided to decline Ann Arbor's offer and recommit to the unfinished work in my current district.
This was not an easy decision. When approached about the superintendency of Ann Arbor, I responded because Ann Arbor embodies the qualities and values that originally drew me to the South Orange Maplewood School District (SOMSD), and have made the work there so meaningful. They are both communities that cherish public education, value diversity, and are willing to address issues of race, class, and student outcomes. For our nation to make good on its promise of equal opportunity, all children must be fully challenged and supported, and leadership must ensure that diverse districts like these achieve equity and excellence for all kids.
For the past few weeks, I have been touched and inspired by the numerous and meaningful demonstrations of support for the work we are doing in SOMSD. I feel that the biggest contribution to public education that I can make at this time is to harness the momentum we have created in SOMSD and accelerate the progress we are making toward truly preparing all students for the myriad challenges they will face in college and career. We have a strong beginning to that journey in SOMSD, and much unfinished work in motion.
There are also family considerations that influence my decision to stay in SOMSD. While Ann Arbor is a place we would be happy to make our home, the timing of this move would have a major impact on my family, including two young children whose upbringing is my highest priority. In addition, over the past few weeks, the medical condition of an ailing family member has intensified, compelling us to stay on the East Coast.

I have appreciated getting to know the Ann Arbor community. Ann Arbor itself is clearly a wonderful and supportive place to live and raise a family. The district has enormous strengths that will help it overcome the formidable challenges that lie ahead. These characteristics reminded me of my commitment to overcoming similar challenges in SOMSD. I appreciate your consideration and offer. I wish you well in finding the best possible person to help move your district forward."

SETON HALL BASKETBALL PLAYERS HELP MAPLEWOOD KIDS

Seton Hall forward Brandon Mobley joined several
 teammates in Maplewood onThursday .
From the Seton Hall Basketball website:

On Thursday morning, several members of the men’s basketball team and coaching staff made the trip to Maplecrest Park in Maplewood, providing over 100 elementary-aged kids in attendance with the opportunity for first-hand interaction and instruction.
“This was definitely a great opportunity for our team to get out and give back to the local community,” said SHU forward Patrik Auda. “It is always nice to get involved with kids over the summer to do fun stuff and teach them basketball.”
Through the clinic, the Pirates worked with the attendees to hone their fundamental basketball skills while also emphasizing the importance of an active and healthy lifestyle.
Community involvement initiatives such as these are a fundamental part of the newly introduced H.A.L.L. (Helping Athletes Learn to be Leaders) Program and are a manifestation of a department-wide commitment to providing a well-balanced student-athlete experience. To learn more about The H.A.L.L. Program, CLICK HERE.
“Giving back to the community has always been a high priority for our program,” said head coach Kevin Willard. “Our players and coaches are encouraged to stay involved, especially when we have opportunities to work with children, like we did today with the South Mountain YMCA. We consistently stress the importance of being role models for local youth to our guys. Participation in these events play a key role in our personal development as leaders, while also enriching our community.”

POLICE TO BEEF UP PRESENCE AFTER LITTLE LEAGUE DISRUPTIONS

Expect a greater police presence at tonight's Northern New Jersey Babe Ruth 13U Division State Championship game at Cameron Field in South Orange after last night's semi-finals produced at least two incidents involving Maplewood players.

As noted earlier, last night's second game, between South Orange-Maplewood and Bayonne, included a disruption when a Bayonne player was called out and Bayonne fans responded with screaming and berating of the umpire.

Now word comes that after the game, in a nearby playground, several Maplewood youngsters who had attended the game were "bullied" by an older Bayonne teen, drawing even more police.

South Orange Police Capt. Kyle Kroll said that incident resulted in no arrests or other further investigation. But he did indicate police would be on the scene for tonight's championship game, between Bayonne and Basking Ridge, just in case.

"We will have a greater presence," he said.

BAD LITTLE LEAGUE PARENTING REARS ITS HEAD AGAIN. ENOUGH!

Add caption
Sad to see another pathetic display of poor sportsmanship from little league parents. This time it was a group from Bayonne, playing in the Northern New Jersey State Championship tournament for the 13U Division against our own South Orange-Maplewood Cougars last night.

SO-Maplewood hosted the tournament this year at Cameron Field in South Orange.

Full disclosure, I was annoucing the game.

At one point, the umpire made a close call at first on a Bayonne player, who was likely safe, but called out.

This did not sit well with the Bayonne coaches and some parents, particularly one women who began screaming at the umpire and was eventually directed to be removed. She was allowed to stay for some reason, likely to avoid a bigger confrontation.

But eventually South Orange Police were involved in the situation.

Parents must know this type of behavior is not accepted. Period. These are 13-year-olds and part-time or volunteer coaches and umpires. No game is worth such abuse. If you sign up you child, as I have, you accept that some calls will be wrong or not to your favor. Deal with it. If you cannot, do not attend the games. End of story.

On a related note, after two-plus seasons parenting a son and daughter in these leagues, I have been most heartened to see that most of the SO-M parents and coaches respect rules and decorum.
