TOWNSHIP COMMITTEE VOTES TO ADOPT POST OFFICE PLAN DESPITE OPPOSITION

Despite an hour of public comments that included many requests to postpone a final vote on the future of the Maplewood Village post office site, the Township Committee vote unanimously Tuesday to select a New York firm and its preliminary plan for the location.

More than an hour of discussion preceded the vote, which adopted the plans for a 10,000-square-foot retail space and up to 25 housing units on the site of the post office that plans to close in March. The township did not renew the post office lease of the site.

Some of the public comments are below:

The plans can be found HERE.

Many residents were opposed to adopting a plan without a chance for further review and to address concerns raised by the group, Engage Maplewood, which included the impact on parking, township services and the overall aesthetics of Maplewood Village.

A Maplewoodian.com poll this past week found that a majority of residents opposed the plan.
