CHS FENCER IS STAR-LEDGER ATHLETE OF THE WEEK

Athlete of the Week - Week 1: Max Gould (boys fencing), Columbia

MAX GOULD, COLUMBIA
Senior epee, 5-11, 195 pounds

JUST THE FACTS: The senior epee fencer has been a key component in establishing the Columbia dynasty during his tenure and was a crucial element in Columbia capturing the gold medal at this year’s Cetrulo Tournament. Gould went undefeated on the B strip, helping propel Columbia’s epee into the A pool in the final round, all but sealing the team's overall gold medal.

ON FENCING FOR COLUMBIA: "Of course there is pressure to be on the Columbia fencing team, but it is a good kind of pressure. We are always the loudest cheering each other on, always have a real team element. These championships we have won, the level that Columbia has reached, this doesn’t come easy. We all train hard. Coach White always reminds us that we have a target on our back.”

TEAM GOAL: "This season we really want the state title. We have a lot of seniors that want to end our high school career on a high note and help prepare the team for future success. As a squad we feel the last few years epee has kind of been the weak point, so this year we kind of huddled together. We went all out at the Cetrulo."
