TRENTON — A bill that would create a hospital database to bolster research into why so many pregnancies result in stillbirth easily passed the Assembly today.
One in every 160 pregnancies in the nation end in stillbirth, accounting for an estimated 700 stillbirths every year in New Jersey, according to the bill.
Stillbirths are defined as "unintended fetal deaths which occur after 20 weeks of pregnancy. . .or involve fetuses weighing 350 or more grams."
The bill (A4280), called the “Autumn Joy Stillbirth Research and Dignity Act,” is named after Autumn Joy Vijayvergiya of Maplewood who was stillborn at 22 weeks in July 2011. The baby's mother, Debbie Haine, has been active in lobbying for the bill's passage.
Assemblywoman Pamela Lampitt (D-Camden), one of the sponsors, called Haine "a very strong woman and sensitive woman, whose great work is why we are here today."
