MAPLEWOOD MIDDLE SCHOOL ISSUES LETTER ABOUT GAS-ODOR EVACUATION

We first told you about the Maplewood Middle School evacuation due to a gas odor yesterday.

Today, Principal Jeffrey Truppo sent this letter to parents that indicated why it occurred and that an alarm malfunction added to the situation.

Dear Maplewood Middle School community Member,

The purpose of this correspondence is to inform you that yesterday, at approximately 3pm, a fire alarm was activated by me.  The building was evacuated because of a reported smell of gas from a section of new construction.  The Maplewood Fire department inspected the area in question and deemed the building safe for reentry.  However, there was a problem shutting off the alarm.

While our alarm service company worked on repairing the fire alarm any students who remained after school to work with their teachers or were present for after school programming were ushered back into the building to retrieve their belongings.  At approximately 5pm yesterday, our fire alarm service company repaired the system and certified that it is in working order.

Sincerely,
Jeff Truppo
