Administrators and students said they were directed to evacuate shortly after school ended at around 3 p.m. Although the school day was over, many students remained in the building at that time for clubs and other after-school activities.
After about an hour, students were allowed to return to the building to get their belongings, but could not remain. Some said the upper floors still had a strong gas smell and increased heat.
