TUESDAY PRIMARY HAS IMPORTANT RACES

For Maplewood Democrats, Tuesday's primary election may seem one to ignore.

President Barack Obama faces no real opposition in the primary and incumbent Township Committee Members Kathy Leventhal and Jerry Ryan are also running unopposed in the primary race.

But two other important elections need your vote.

For one, the 10th Congressional District, of which Maplewood is a part, has a major battle brewing among those seeking to replace the late Donald Payne, who died in March.

Payne's son, Donald Payne, Jr.,  is running against Newark Councilman Ron C. Rice, son of State Sen. Ron Rice., as well as Irvington Mayor Wayne Smith, Montclair State Sen. Nia Gil, Iraq war veteran Dennis Flynn, and green energy supporter Cathy Wright.

The Democrat who wins Tuesday will likely win the general election given the ovewhelming Democratic population in this district. So this may be your best chance to have an impact.

In addition, all Democrats who vote Tuesday will be able to choose Democratic District Leaders for Maplewood. These are the people who make up the local Democratic Committee and vote each election to endorse candidates in the primaries.

So show up and vote and have your say.
