TOWNSHIP ENVIRONMENTAL COMMITTEE CONCERNED ABOUT LACK OF GREEN IN PROJECTS

Township Committee member Kathy Leventhal raised concerns about the lack of renewable energy and other environmental elements in the Township's two biggest development projects.

Speaking at Tuesday's Township Committee meeting, Leventhal reported that the township Environmental Advisory Committee had met and shown serious concern about the lack of so-called green elements for the Maplewood Village post office redevelopment project and the Avalon Bay complex at the former PSE&G site on Boyden Avenue.

In comments to the TC, Leventhal said:

"The concern with the Environmental Advisory Committee is that we are not going high enough in terms of what we are asking for ... that they're not putting much green into the buildings themselves. I wanted to convey that here ... if there's any way in our process to emphasize what the Green Team and the Environmental Advisory Committee are both saying for both of these projects I think we should do that ... Especially since you can do something like that for solar and it is a win for them also."

Her views followed an earlier statement at the meeting from the Maplewood Green Team about similar concerns for the post office site.
