In a surprise move on Tuesday, South Orange Middle School principal Joseph Uglialoro resigned, according to a letter he sent to SOMS parents and staff.
The letter, which gave no reason for his departure or plans for the future said, in part:
It is with a heavy heart that I am writing to inform you of my resignation as Principal of South Orange Middle School. Since
joining the South Orange Middle School faculty in July of 2011, I have
been incredibly privileged to work each day with such a thoughtful and
caring faculty and staff. During these four years we have partnered in
the important, complex, and challenging work of increasing access,
outcomes, and opportunities for all children. While there
is still a long way to go to ensuring equity and excellence for every
middle school child at SOMS, I know that together we have made
substantial strides in preparing our students for success in high school
and beyond, and in providing them with increased opportunities to
develop their talents in the arts, music, and technology.
Uglialoro had served as principal for only four years, a tenure that included some rough patches with claims by some staff of poor treatment and criticism, and complaints about his strict approach to a school dress code that included forcing some girls to go home and change.
There was also an alleged incident in the girls locker room that sparked a district investigation. Although he was found to have committed no wrongdoing, the incident left many wondering about his approach.
Uglialoro plans to leave August 1. His departure is yet another administrative change in a year that has seen new principals at Columbia High School, Maplewood Middle School and Jefferson School. South Mountain School principal Tina Lehn also just retired.
Not to mention a new superintendent, John Ramos, who will take over next month and three new school board members who joined this year. Incumbent board member Jeff Bennett, meanwhile, has said he will not run again this fall.
