From CHS Principal Elizabeth Aaron:
We are pleased to let you know (though we hope
your students have told you already, and perhaps shared their poetry
skills with you at home!) that in the last month, poetry has been in the hearts and minds of the 1,900 students at Columbia High School.
They were preparing to participate in the Poetry
Out Loud National Recitation Contest. Created by the National Endownment
for the Arts and the Poetry Foundation, Poetry Out Loud is administered
in partnership with the State Arts Agencies of all 50 states, the
District of Columbia and the U.S. Virgin Islands, and Puerto Rico.
This
is the first year the entire CHS student body has participated.
Classroom competitions were held in December. The
classroom winners moved on to the school competition level and, over the
last three days, 15 finalists have emerged to compete this Monday,
January 11th at 7 p.m. in the Columbia High School Auditorium.
We were
pleased to welcome back some retired CHS teachers, community members,
and staff from throughout the building to serve as our judges. We are
proud to tell you that our finalists are:
Jasmine Keegan
Stephanie Cadet
Theresa Desir
Kasper Kransdorf
Kamille Sabio
Hunter Kovacs
Riley Wine
Charlotte Steiner
Caleb Heinze
Sarah Braka
Lucy Schmidt
Sir Barr
Isadora Kianovsky
Kristen Bailey
Kayla Bonhomme-Anthony
The entire community is invited to
witness this great event at 7 pm on Monday in the CHS Auditorium.
Students and siblings are admitted free with a CHS student I.D., and we ask for
a suggested donation from adults of $10. Proceeds will support the CHS
annual Shakespeare Festival and the Parnassian Society's trip to
perform at the Edinburgh Festival in August 2016.
