St. James' Gate's proposal to create a sidewalk cafe remains in limbo as the Township continues to research whether the sidewalk in question is owned by the pub's landlord or by the town.
The Township Committee on July 19 approved the pub's request to extend its liquor license to serve alcohol on the sidewalk out front on Maplewood Avenue.
But the question of who owns the sidewalk remained up in the air. Landlord Glenn Sussman, who owns the building, had declined to allow the sidewalk cafe when he was approached by pub owner James Meade. Meade said Sussman had said he might allow it if Meade paid a fee.
When Meade appealed to the Township, he was told Township Administrator Joseph Manning would have to review the legality and determine if the sidewalk is owned by Sussman or by the Township. If the Township owns it, the TC can grant permission for the sidewalk cafe without Sussman's approval.
But Manning told the TC Tuesday night he had still not determined the ownership and would continue to review.
