The Township plans to increase Jitney fees in 2017 for the first time in three years, Mayor Vic Deluca announced Tuesday night.
He said the fare increase would raise the annual Jitney fee from $92 to $100, and the combo NJ Transit parking/Jitney fee from $232 to $250. The single ride fare would double from $1 to $2 under the proposal.
"We are just seeing the operating cost go up and the only revenue that we have to support the Jitneys is the far box revenue and the general fund," Deluca said. "We are just trying to find a balance."
The mayor said the estimated operating budget for the Jitney in 2017 is $250,000. Right now, the fees and fare payments cover just 35% of that, with the remainder coming from the Township budget.
Deluca said the proposed increase, which would take effect in 2017, would raise that to 40%, a rate that most other public transit agencies use. It would also occur as the Township is planning to add another Jitney bus.

The Township Committee is expected to consider an ordinance for the fare hike at the first TC meeting in October.
