HEALTH DEPARTMENT REVEALS RECENT CHILD CARE CENTER DISEASE "OUTBREAK"

Health Officer Robert Roe reported to the Township Committee on Tuesday night that there had been what he termed a "couple of outbreaks" of Coxsackie Disease, also known as Hand-Foot-Mouth disease in some local child care centers.

During his monthly Health Department report he said the outbreaks occurred in June and were taken care of in a short time span without closing any of the child care centers.

"It’s a common childhood disease but it is very unusual to be seen in large outbreaks," Roe said during the meeting, later adding, "the outbreaks happened so quick, it's almost by the time you found out closing it is an option, but we chose to work with parents and child care directors to limit its spread.”

He did not identify the child care centers involved, but said it had been brought under control and no further risk existed.
