POST OFFICE SITE SALE COULD NET TOWNSHIP $950,000

Former Maplewood Village post office
The Township may get $950,000 for the former Maplewood Village Post Office property from JMF Properties, the firm that is developing the site into a housing/retail complex.

Township Attorney Roger Desiderio told the Township Committee Tuesday night that negotiations with the firm are progressing and would likely result in a sale of the land, which the Township owns, for $1.25 Million.

But $200,000 of that would be a credit toward environmental clean-up and demolition, and $100,000 for the Township's affordable housing trust fund in exchange for an exemption that the project will not have any affordable housing units. That means the Township's final profit would be $950,000.

An appraisal done by the Township found that the price was in line with its findings.

The proposed complex, which is currently undergoing planning board approvals, would include 20 units and 9,000 square feet of retail space.

An ordinance on the agreement will be reviewed on March 17 at the next TC meeting. Projected closing date would be July 15, Desiderio said.

The post office relocated last week to the new site at 195 Maplewood Ave.
