TEACHERS UNION CLAIMS CONCERNS AT MMS IN WAKE OF GUN INCIDENT

Teachers union leaders offered harsh criticism of discipline and overall teacher treatment at Maplewood Middle School following the recent weapons incident, saying students are allowed to flaunt some rules and unfairly treat teachers.

South Orange Maplewood Education Association President Paul Bethea and Vice President Hannah Edelman addressed the Board of Education on Monday night, reading a lengthy statement about their concerns. Among them are accusations that some students are favored in their discipline and claims teachers have left out of fear.

The concerns follow the June 3 arrest of an MMS student accused of bringing a loaded 9 mm. handgun to school. He has since been removed and placed in juvenile detention.
