OUR PERFECT PITCHER

Phil Humber of the Chicago White Sox was not the only person to throw a perfect game last week.

Columbia High's own Jimmy Murphy did the same thing a day earlier, blanking Johnson High School in Clark and striking out 16 in the 1-0 victory.

As the Star-Ledger reported:

Right-hander Jimmy Murphy pitched a no-hitter, struck out 16 and walked none in Columbia's 1-0 victory over Johnson High of Clark last Friday to further ratchet up his budding reputation as a lockdown ace.

A buzz has preceded his outings this spring as the senior has cranked up his fastball to 88-90 mph and fine-tuned a repertoire that includes a fastball, cut fastball, curveball and change-up.

"Jimmy can usually get three of those pitches under control," Columbia coach Larry Busichio said. "He had all four going against Johnson."
