TUSCAN SCHOOL SECURITY BREACH SPARKING WRONG SCAPEGOAT

The uproar created at Tuscan School after an NBC News reporter was allowed access to the building and roamed the halls before being found is expected to continue tonight at the Board of Education meeting where numerous parents and others plan to take their concerns to the school board.

The meeting is at 7:30 p.m. The full agenda is HERE.

After a lively meeting last week at Tuscan, the demand for better security, and perhaps a full-time security guard at the main entrance, is growing.

But also growing is the demand by some for a scapegoat. One unfair target is the Tuscan office receptionist, Magda Toledo. A favorite of students and parents, and a true pro, Toledo does her job well and with care.

Sadly, rumors are mounting that she will be removed for mistakenly letting the reporter in. The truth is that scanning the entrance for visitors and judging their security potential is a job for someone who can devote a full-time effort to the need.

Toledo must answer phones, greet visitors, and handle many ongoing demands for student and parental needs, as well as those of teachers and staff.

If you want to criticize anyone, it is Principal Malikah Majeed. Since she took the top job, Majeed has been a frustrating presence for many parents, refusing to respond to numerous parental needs and all but ignoring concerns dating back to the 2012 Newtown, CT school shooting that prompted many parents to reach out to Majeed and ask that tighter security be implemented.

Many such requests have been ignored.

If you want to improve security and overall quality at Tuscan, make sure to keep Magda Toledo and remove Malikah Majeed.
