SOUTH MOUNTAIN SCHOOL SMOKE SPARKED EVACUATION

From South Mountain School to parents on Friday:

Good Morning South Mountain Families:

We had a precautionary evacuation this morning at the Big School, and I am writing to let you know that everyone is safe. At about 9:15 am this morning a teacher and a parent were on the lower level of the big school. They reported smelling smoke to the office.

Ms. Goodman pulled the alarm, I announced over the public address system for teachers to exit their classes through the front door.

The South Orange Fire Department and the South Orange Police Department responded and found a tree on an adjoining property which appeared to be smoldering on the top. They put caution tape around the area, called PSE&G. SOMSD’s Supervisor of Buildings and Grounds, Mr. William Kyle is on site to inspect the situation.

All students were brought back into the school within 20 minutes, and all classes have resumed their normal schedules.

As you know, the safety and security of our students, staff and families is always our top priority. We are grateful to the South Orange Fire and Police Departments for their quick response and assistance.

Interim Principal
