For the second year in a row, sophomore Bryn Hammarberg of Columbia found himself in the clinching bout of a state championship match.
His freshman year, Hammarberg and his teammates came away with silver. This year, they took home the gold.
Led by an undefeated performance from Hammarberg, including the clinching 26th bout, Columbia earned its third state title in four years with a 14-13 victory over Watchung Hills in the finals of the NJSIAA team tournament last night at Morris Hills in Rockaway.
Hammarberg came up big all night. In the first round, with his team trailing, 4-2, after a surprising 3-0 sweep from Watchung Hills in foil, Hammarberg defeated Watchung Hills epee ace Eric Gardner, 4-3, to slow the opposing team’s momentum and allow Columbia to leave the first round trailing by only 5-4.
