The appointment of a new director of special services for the district drew heated discussion at Monday night's school board meeting with some residents citing problems with the program and concerns that the new director is a current supervisor within the existing program.
That new director is Ella Rideau, who currently serves as supervisor of special services for Grades K-5, whose nomination was proposed at Monday's meeting.
The board voted, 5-4, to appointment Rideau, with Board Members Elizabeth Baker, Maureen Jones, Madhu Pai and Johanna Wright voting no.
Several residents spoke out that someone from within the existing program, which is being criticized, will now take over rather than a new, fresh outsider or under a new structure.
Board members reacted to several stories of improper treatment and other concerns with their own questions about the program and a new director.
"I have more questions than answers," said Board Member Wright.
Acting Superintendent James Memoli said the choice of a new director was done with an administrative committee and with input from incoming Superintendent John Ramos.
But several board members said they wanted more time to review the appointment and the entire special education program before deciding on a new director.
"I think we need to own that problem and have that discussion," said Board Member Elizabeth Baker. "It is premature to be filling such a vital position in our district."
Still, others said the process has been followed and backed the appointment decision. "I am supportive of the administration's recommendation," said Board Member Donna Smith.
