BAKER EXPECTED TO BE NEXT SCHOOL BOARD PRESIDENT

Elizabeth Baker is the odds on favorite to become the next school board president, according to sources close to the negotiations.

When the board reconvenes Monday at its annual reorganization meeting, Baker is expected to have the majority votes needed to be the next president.

During that meeting, newly elected members Chris Sabin and Annemarie Maini will be sworn in. They replace former board members Jeffrey Bennett, who chose not to run for re-election, and former board president Wayne Eastman, who was voted off the board. Incumbent Madhu Pai, who won re-election, will also be sworn in to another term.

Baker, who has served on the board for only one year, was a supporter of Maini and Sabin, and ran last year with Board Member Maureen Jones. She has proven her ability to work with other members and raise questions related to budget issues, taxes and other concerns of the district.

Baker declined to comment on her potential presidency. She needs five votes of the 9-person board to gain the seat.

Monday's meeting is set for 7:30 p.m. at the board offices, 525 Academy St.

And she wanted to keep the expensive IB program even in the face of all of the teachers who said it wasn't working or a good fit for our district...ugh!
